A great idea, if you are considering hosting a birthday party for your kids, or if you have been asked to host a party, is to think about basing the day’s activities and decoration around a partcular theme

Construction Themed Party

With the recent popularity of Bob the Builder, construction work has been given a more glamorous, kid-friendly appeal. Of course, kids have always been fascinated by big machines, and will happily play for hours in the garden or sandpit wheeling dirt around in the scoop of a JCB!

You can capitalize on this fascination by decorating your party venue and organising games based on the theme of construction

Invitations

Make invitations out of orange/yellow construction paper and decorate them with alternating black strips to give them that authentic theme. Write on the invitation a dress code too, of “jeans and trainers (work clothes)”‘

Decorations and Table Settings for the Construction Theme

  • You’ll probably be able to pick up a range of Bob the Builder partyware, such as disposable plates, napkins etc. at any good party store but if you can’t find anything like that, then go for partyware with a construction colour theme - black and yellow, like the colours of most heavy machinery.
  • Use orange and black balloons to keep the theme going. Hang “Construction site - do not enter” tape around the place too.
  • See if you can get hold of some construction style signs too “Men at work” “Hard hat area” etc. - A great place to look for things like this, as well as other bits and pieces for the party is at your local DIY store. Now, don’t go buying lots of heavy machinery and sharp tools! All you need to look for are some child friendly things which can be used to decorate the party, and also for dressing up and games - yellow hard hats are an ideal choice to really help set the mood.

  • if you can’t find any builders signs or decorations, then if you have access to a colour printer and a PC, you can print out a range of colourful signs - have a search around on Google Image search for “construction signs” and you should find something suitable.
  • To decorate the table, why not try covering it first of all in a black/grey cloth, and then sticking out strips of white tape around on the cloth to make it appear like the table is a road surface. Maybe put a few flashing orange lights around, just for fun! Small sized traffic cones would also make great decoration scattered around the room too.
  • See if you can get hold of some yellow/black construction toys too, for the kids to play with if they get bored. Lego is also great for this, as it’s a popular toy and keeps up with the overall construction theme.
